Primary to secondary: assessments, interviews and the EMI switch

Primary to secondary: assessments, interviews and the EMI switch

The first hurdle is internal assessment. P5 second-term and P6 results affect school ranking and placement bands, so build a steady routine from P4 and drill question types in Chinese, English and maths from P5 second term. The goal is consolidating primary concepts, not racing ahead into the secondary syllabus.

The second is the interview. DSS and private schools commonly run individual and group interviews assessing structured expression, manners and awareness of current affairs. Mock practice works best: self-introduction, why this school, a view on a news topic, and how you respond to others in a group.

The third is the switch to English-medium instruction. Many students fall behind after S1 because subject vocabulary is missing, especially in science and humanities. Build a subject vocabulary list first, then work through the textbook in parallel — most adapt within one to two months.

Parents should consult the Education Bureau's public material on secondary place allocation and the school curriculum, and treat each target school's published admission criteria as authoritative. A tutor's value is turning those requirements into a weekly practice plan, not making the school choice for you.

Parents should refer to the Education Bureau's published information on school placement and curricula when planning transitions.
